graduate student resources: job searching

job searching

This page includes all the resources I know of for job seeking.  I'm afraid this is skewed to the sociocultural crowd, but the first three resources will be useful to all of you.  You will also find a lot of overlap between the jobs posted among these various sources, but it's good to check all of them regularly (or set up email alerts if possible):

1. First, of course, is the AAA job website at:
http://aaanet.jobcontrolcenter.com/search.cfm
You don't have to sign in to be able to see t he jobs.

2. Subscribe to the Chronicle for Higher Education job email alerts at:
http://chronicle.com/jobs/notify.htm
You can have multiple searches running, and they will email you weekly with the latest finds.  Sign up for all potential fields (for example, when I was job hunting I also subscribed to Women's Studies, American Studies, and Sociology jobs too).

3. H-Net at:
http://www.h-net.org/jobs/browse.php
This is another very broadly used source for academic jobs.  No email alerts available here, but check often.  Like with CHR, make sure you look broadly (e.g. in European Studies, American Studies, Communication, Sociology, etc. as well as Anthropology).

4. American Sociological Association:
http://jobbank.asanet.org/jobbank/index.cfm
Unfortunately, you have to be a member to search this site, but find a buddy in the sociology department who is an ASA member and who will let you look.  Sociology has WAY more job postings than Anthropology, and many departments are seeking ethnographers.  I got one of my campus visit interviews through a job I applied to from the ASA website, so don't discount this resource.

More specific sources.

5. American Studies Association:
http://www.georgetown.edu/crossroads/AmericanStudiesAssn/newsletter/o&r/employment.htm
For those of you sociocultural types working in the US/the Americas

6. National Women's Studies Association:
http://www.nwsa.org/employ/index.php
Specifically for the field of women's/gender studies.  Lots of jobs not applicable to anthropologists, but there are always several that are possibilities.
